Greg Dawson Biography

Greg Dawson grew up outside Chicago and came to New York City immediately following his graduation from Yale University. He has been painting and sculpting his entire adult life, while at the same time actively pursuing a career in theater, television and radio production, and as the creative force and founding partner of the seminal New York cabaret/restaurant of the '80s...The Ballroom. His uncle was the American abstract pioneer, Manierre Dawson.

For the past dozen years he has devoted his full time to creating a large body of work...well over a thousand paintings and some 250 sculptures and wall pieces.

His paintings are primarily done in watercolor and acrylic, and the sculptures are constructions in wood and a variety of other materials. Some of the sculptures have been cast in bronze, utracal and epoxy.

Recently he has explored areas of architectural design elements, producing several friezes and a series of 24 knobs that can be produced in any number of materials, including the whole array of casting metals. He has also received several commissions for some monumental outdoor sculptures and large murals.

He maintains a studio/gallery in Downtown Brooklyn, NY, and invites visitors on an appointment basis.
